According to the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, cancer is the number one cause of death by disease among children, yet only 4% of the billions of government-funded cancer research dollars go toward pediatric cancer.

UPMC Children’s cancer program has been giving hope and new beginnings to children and their families for 70 years, and it actively contributes to the field of pediatric hematology and oncology research. Dr. Linda McAllister-Lucas and her team of over 30 clinical research professionals are pioneering new treatments that benefit not only the children in our care, but also children being treated at hospitals across the country and around the world.

Blazing the Trail to New Beginnings

• UPMC Children’s cancer patients have the opportunity to participate in over 100 active clinical trials, studies of the most promising and newest cancer treatments.
• UPMC Children’s is the only institution in the region participating in Phase 1 clinical trials through the UPMC Children’s Oncology Group and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium.
• Other clinical trials underway at UPMC Children’s are studying bone marrow transplantation, treatment of sickle cell disease, cancer control, and late-effects in oncology.
• The sickle cell program at UPMC Children’s is one of eight sites worldwide participating in a clinical trial to determine the prevalence of pulmonary hypertension, a serious complication involving the heart and lungs.

• Received four awards for exceptional care and physician education including five faculty members named Best Doctors in America.
• Launched three new clinical programs.
• Obtained four critical research grants.
• Forged six collaborative relationships with national and international oncology professional associations.
• Managed 116 clinical trials offering the latest experimental therapies including groundbreaking work in protein-influenced cancer progression.

Pioneering treatment is only part of the care we provide to our young cancer warriors. While our medical team focuses on the cancer, our Child Life team focuses on their big hearts.
